in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen…what a great little beach city. In so many ways, it’s the perfect fun-in-the-sun vacation destination. On a gorgeous stretch of Caribbean coastline, Playa is smack dab in the middle of the paradisaic Mayan Riviera.
The city itself offers many attractions, plus you don’t have to go far to enjoy the raw beauty of the surrounding area.
Playa del Carmen has its own charming character that’s youthful, free-spirited and yet ambitious. This once sleepy little fishing village has developed rapidly. It’s definitely more grown up than Tulum, but far more bohemian and quaint than Cancun. Just walk 5th Ave [affectionately known as La Quinta], and you’ll see this beach city’s fun personality all around you!
Unlike other scuba diving destinations, Playa del Carmen offers not only marine beauty but also the history of an ancient civilization. This stunning place on the Mayan Riviera has the second largest coral reef in the world, boasting mystical paths in the caverns of its cenotes, exotic marine life in its reefs and the opportunity to swim in its long underground rivers. Dive around the hawksbill turtles and jellyfish and see the diverse corals at the bottom. In the clear crystal waters you can admire colorful tropical fish, crabs, octopuses, lobsters and moray eels.
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of restaurants in Playa Del Carmen. Every day can be a new dining experience. Perhaps sitting at a table on the beach and ordering fresh barbecued seafood. Or finding a dingy backstreet and gorging yourself on a plate of tacos bigger than the table. In Playa Del Carmen there is the intimate, the loud, the bizarre, the fun, and the luxury fine dining experience. Italian, Mexican, Mayan, Japanese, Indian, German, Spanish, Argentinian, American, the list of culinary influences is endless.
The attractions in and around Playa are many…visit the Xcaret or Xel-Ha parks, Cirque du Soleil, Tulum ruins and beaches, cenotes…you name it! Swim with the turtles in Akumal, take a day trip to Cozumel, Chichen Itzá, or Valladolid. Into water sports? Playa has it all, from scuba diving to kite boarding.
